This temple is located at mountain ranges of Western Ghats of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. This temple records forty five to fifty million of devotees who come to visit annually. It is supposed that Hindu god Ayyappan has meditated over here after the elimination of demons, “mahishi”. This temple is situated over here amidst eighteen hills. This temple is situated in between the dense forests and mountains as well as it is situated a hilltop of 1535 ft (468m) above the sea level. However, functional and integral temples is present at lots of places in the nearby areas such as kalaketi, karimala and nilackal, leftovers of old temples continue to exist till now, on remaining hills.

Sabrimala temple is associated with Hindu pilgrimage and mainly for men of every age. Women of age ten to fifty are not allowed to enter into the temple. This is because of legend that lord Ayyappa has prohibited the women entry of all age groups till they have their menstrual cycle going on and this is done because Ayyappa is a Bramachari or celibate.
